Dr. Shalini Jain

Dr. Jain’s passion is wellness and the prevention of disease through the artful practice of medicine.  She believes the most effective approach to caring for her clients is a personalized one, as opposed to the hurried, fast-food “one size fits all” style that is commonly practiced in today’s over-burdened healthcare environment.

As a Latin honors graduate of Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA, Dr. Jain studied pre-med while attaining her bachelor of arts (BA) in social psychology and biological psychology, which was her focus during her semester at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

Dr. Jain is a published first author and presenter from her early days doing research at the prestigious Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA in photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the pre-cursor to “laser eye surgery”.

Dr. Jain headed West to the San Francisco Bay Area and Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA in the mid-90’s. At Stanford, Dr. Jain designed, published and presented as first author, her full-length funded study addressing pain management following refractive surgery. She became the youngest first author to present at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting in San Francisco at its 100th anniversary. Also while at Stanford, Dr. Jain studied Wilderness Medicine and Public Health, which are two areas she continues to serve in her volunteer time.

Dr. Jain earned her medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She was recruited by the kidney transplant team (vascular surgery) and also published a case study in “Transplant” Magazine as first author. She co-founded and served as President of an organization called, “Healthcare in Transition (HIT)”, and ignited her life-long passion for movement towards efficiency in healthcare delivery.

Finding her ultimate passion in the broader and more applicable specialty of family medicine, Dr. Jain chose a specialty she could “take with her wherever she goes” and not feel tied down to operating rooms when performing procedures out in the field or in remote locations.

For this, she landed well in the top notch family medicine residency program at UCLA-Santa Monica Medical Center in Santa Monica, CA. She board certified in family medicine in 2004 and then completed an additional two-year fellowship in integrative medicine at the prestigious Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. There she joined her mentors and colleagues in diving deep into learning Western herbal medicine and additionally trained in functional medicine, a close relative of integrative medicine.

Dr. Jain views the practice of healing arts as a lifelong commitment to learning. Her relentless pursuit of education at the top universities in the world has served her patients, current clients and numerous others whose lives she has touched though her commitment and dedication to service.

In finding her “home base” in coastal Southern CA for going on almost thirty years, Dr. Jain has most certainly absorbed the essence of the Southern California lifestyle and has translated it into her work. Her time spent in community through volunteering with the Malibu Emergency Response Team and CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) in Malibu, CA and being out in the land which has surrounded her while studying Western herbal medicine, is some of her most cherished. Her ability to share all of this with you here and now is what this space is all about.
